Week 1 - The Passage of Time

DXB202. Week One, Image One. #Oneperday2017
Image one is 'Ageing', to represent this I decided to use a an image of myself, showing one half as me currently young, and the other as me old. I first took a photo of myself, used Adobe Photoshop and digital tools, to help visualise what I would look like older. I placed the image in Adobe Illustrator, and vectorised the photo using the pen tool and simple shapes. I decided to use two different colour palates for young and old, to really show the difference; The circle background was to represent a setting sun.
The lyrics was a choice to create a deeper meaning, especially for me having the ideology that music helps us, through both the hard times and the good times. The specific song I chose was Mumford and Sons - Awake My Soul, this particular verse may seem obvious with its meaning, but for me Mumford and Sons is a band that has helped me through a lot of my ups and downs, and creates the emotional pull I want to create with 'Ageing'.

Critique - I feel as though the illustration is too simple, if I worked more on editing the original photo I would have chosen the as my piece, but felt like my Photoshop skills weren't strong enough. I also beleive the older side of my face may be too dark, or the wrong colour. Also my nostrils look odd…
I am happy with the final result, and believe I created a close enough image to what I had set out in the beginning.

DXB202. Week One, Image Two. #Oneperday2017
Image Two is 'Growing', I really struggled with creating an image that not only meant something to me, but also used the tools I had at my disposal. I first thought plants, animals, or even my niece, sister, mum, and grandmother in one photo to symbolises growing up. I decided, however, to use this painting I did in an art class the other week called Namaste.
I believe this is almost an inward look at growing up, to me it's about finding peace inside you that will help you on the journey of life, as the sun sets a new day will come, and with each day, you grow. It's a very symbolic painting and creates a personal depth for this weeks theme.

Critique - I feel strongly about this painting, I haven't done any painting in many many years, seeing this final product makes me very happy. It's not without flaws but overall it's good to add traditional art amongst the digital and photographic images.

DXB202. Week One, Image Three. #Oneperday2017
Image Three is 'Sprouting', and what better way to represent this then a sequence of time from a seed, to a tree. I created this illustration using Illustrator and my Wacom Tablet, I did use a few reference images for the seed growing, then adapted it into the final tree. I decided to not colour this illustration in, feeling that everyone I tried, it didn't improve the drawing. The song choice is from the Disney film, Bambi, I love the sound and meaning of this song, it's the perfect melody for rain, and thinking about life etc… which creates a lovely feel for this illustrative piece.

Critique - I was really proud of the tree illustration, it looks really amazing as the basic black sketch I have, but felt like it needed more to be an image…and perhaps spending more time in planning how to showcase my illustration could have improved this.

DXB202. Week One, Image Four. #Oneperday2017
Image Four is 'Changing' … I decided to base this on my future career, and what change means to me.
Being an aspiring Graphic Designer, the issue of digital taking over print always comes up, and so I created this imagery with the basis of that war in mind. I tried to create a computer monitor, but for its base was a book, to give the abstract representation that not only digital technologies grew from print, but it's now on top.
The book, titled 'Death of Print', was for obvious reason, but the choice for 'Vol 4' may be unknown to most people, this is a nod to the 4th Industrial Revolution, which is  the fusion of technologies which is blurring the lines of the digital, psychical and biological world, most believe it's currently happening or about to begin.
The entire piece was created in Adobe Illustrator, I used some reference images to make sure it was accurate, particularly with the book. The song choice was Bob Dylan - The Times Are A Changing, this poetic tune fits neatly with my idea of how we are changing as a civilisation, and we need to start adapting to new technologies at a faster rate then ever before.

Critique - I truly like the concept, I feel its a strong idea, but my execution wasn't handled good enough, I believe I needed to find a better way to merge the digital and print together… also I am not sure about the texture on the book, especially against the white text, and simple computer screen.

DXB202. Week One, Image Five. #Oneperday2017
Image Five is 'Decomposing'. Luck would have it, I have a cow skull chilling at my house.
I knew I wanted to take photos of my cow skull, I set it down on some dirt, to represent the earth and everything returning to the ground. I tried different angles, and positions, with the aim to capture the interesting details of the skull, while also showing what it clearly is.
This image was captured with a Nikon D3300 Focus 3.5 - Exposure 1/50.

Critique - I had a ton of great images for the skull, and really struggled with choosing the right image, how much of the skull to show etc. I believed I created an overall solid image that resonates with 'decomposing', however I still wonder if I should have experimented more the photos I had.
